Diabetic Exams

Living with diabetes means paying attention to more than blood sugar. Regular eye evaluations help identify changes that may not yet affect how you see.

CARE, CLEARLY EXPLAINED

A closer look at the health of your retina.

Diabetes can affect the small blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Early diabetic eye disease may not cause noticeable symptoms. A diabetic eye exam is designed to look for these changes and assess other aspects of eye health.

Your visit includes a discussion of your diabetes history, medications, vision changes, and other health conditions. Dilation and retinal evaluation may be recommended, along with additional testing when appropriate. The findings help guide monitoring, communication with your diabetes-care clinician, or referral to a retinal specialist if needed.

My vision seems normal. Do I still need an exam?

Yes—eye changes related to diabetes can begin without symptoms. Your eye doctor and diabetes-care clinician can recommend a schedule based on the type and duration of diabetes, previous findings, and your individual needs.

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

A little preparation helps.

  • Bring your diabetes medication list and clinician contact information.
  • Bring recent relevant health information if available.
  • Ask about dilation and consider arranging a ride.
